Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city is on the move!
For the first time in history an entire city is being moved two miles. The city, which is home to one of the world’s largest underground iron ore mines, operated by LKAB, is sinking due to land deformation caused by mining activity. The dilemma now is: move brick by brick or be swallowed by the mine?
Swedish company White Arkitekter won an international competition in 2013 for the new masterplan and strategy of how to relocate the city. The first phase of their 100-year strategy broke ground in early 2014.
