Walter Streight Howes is the Managing Director of Verdigris Capital, LLC, a merchant banking firm focused on companies, technologies and projects in the areas of – energy, transportation, agriculture, and infrastructure. Verdigris invests in, partners with and advises companies and projects in these sectors, both in the US and internationally.
Prior to founding Verdigris, Mr. Howes served at the U.S. Department of Energy, holding numerous positions, under four Secretaries’ of Energy. As Director of the Office of Acquisition Reform and Privatization, he was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Energy developing and implementing the Department’s privatization, finance and acquisition reform initiatives.
In the position of Senior Advisor for Acquisition Policy he; drove the integration of disciplined project management with performance based acquisition skills, developed core elements of DOE’s orders and directives, and oversaw the acquisition of new projects ranging in size from several million to over $10 billion. He also led the development and execution of public-private partnerships in several areas, including technology commercialization and the financing/construction of new facilities and laboratories for the federal government.
As the first Director of the Loan Guarantee Office, established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Mr. Howes formed a new entity now responsible for awarding and directing over $35 billion in Federal Loan Guarantees intended to drive the expanded commercialization of sustainable, innovative energy and infrastructure projects. He received numerous awards and distinctions while serving at the DOE.
He has worked extensively with the U.S. and foreign laboratory systems, with a focus on the identification and commercialization of new energy technologies.
In addition to his government service, Mr. Howes has over 30 years of private market experience in global investment and commercial banking, private equity, venture capital and international privatization activities. He was President of the EBI Capital Group, Vice President of Credit Suisse First Boston and Citicorp, and served with the Ministry of Industry & Finance for the Czech Government.
Mr. Howes graduated with honors from Duke University in 1979, with majors in both Chemistry and Economics. He has a Masters of Business Administration in International Finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including Board member and Chair of the Corporate Committee for Duke University’s School of the Environment, Chair of the Privatization Committee for DOE’s Environmental Management Advisory Board, Board of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce-DC and member of the International Board of Advisors of the Korean Institute of Energy Research(KIER).
He is a frequent speaker and writer on issues related to energy, sustainability, technology commercialization and related markets. Verdigris Capital is based in McLean, VA and Washington, D.C.
